Where are We Now and Where are We Going?
Over three months ago, we met up and discussed projects to achieve triple-bottom-line in our rural communities. But have we made progress? Are there updates in our communities? Over this past three days, we have reflected, sensed, and outlined a plan for creating a systemic change with our projects.
As we thought about our communities and current systems, we tried to identify the ‘leaks’ in them. Through an activity based around Import Replacement, we asked ourselves 1) what are we bringing into or importing into our communities/systems? 2) what are the barriers to replace these imports? 3) what are the untapped assets in our community? This activity started to get our minds thinking about ways to keep our communities’ economies more localized, and identify potential ways to clog the leaks with our available assets. Innovation is not about reinventing the wheel, but rather “the recombination of already existing ideas/technologies, resources, and networks.”
After reflecting about our current systems, we need to sense and understand them. A great way to begin sensing is to simply listen and ask to understand what and why the system is occurring. Testing and experimenting go hand in hand with sensing. Once you understand your system, you can experiment to overcome the risk and assumptions that you may have toward changing the system.
